The Whitehaven Pottery was opened in Dec. 2002 after the Whitehaven Community Trust Ltd purchased & renovated a building in Whitehaven Market Place. In the 18th century this was the site of a pottery & the Trusts aims were to re-introduce pottery to the site & provide a community resource for the people of Whitehaven. The building sites a working pottery, café, shop & provides a base for the Lakes College in Whitehaven. Whitehaven Community Trust provides services to the whole community, but has a particular focus on training & supporting young people. The pottery provides training opportunities in the production, firing & painting of pottery, plus retail, catering & customer service experience. It also provides a valuable educational & tourist facility in the centre of Whitehaven.
